thoughts on Mapplethorpe, censorship and the power of the erotic

I like Mapplethorpe, I first saw his photos in a taschen photo book of male nudes I acquired long after his death and I could not turn away. But then some were very difficult for me, particularly the ones that are not entirely nudes but still in the erotica genre. Some others were the impetus for my own art studies. action for lesbian and gay civil partnership

Civil partnership has been announced for heterosexual couples in Greece but not for lesbians and gay men. Nevertheless, there is no law that forbids same sex partnership and two couples in Athens, one in Thessaloniki are preparing for the happy event. It seems unlucky that the loophole in a law that is there since 1982 was discovered just as the hetero civil partnership one is put into work. The civil partnership for lesbian and gay couples has been talked about for years and activists and bloggers are protesting against the discriminating new law. Urgent support is needed since the law will be soon voted in Parliament. This is from ‘Gay Super Hero’ blog:

‘…send an e-mail directly to the greek Ministry of Justice to voice your disapproval. The Ministry’s e-mail address is grammatia@justice.gov.gr You can send a brief note, something like this:

“I understand that it is the intention of your Ministry to present a bill in parliament instituting a new domestic partnership contract that excludes same-sex couples. I believe this discrimination is contrary to both the greek Constitution and european Law and I would like to expresss my protest and disapproval.”
